Lenovo to cut 450 jobs in China

Shanghai. February 25. INTERFAX-CHINA - Lenovo Group Ltd., China's largest PC manufacturer, announced on Feb. 25 that it will cut 450 jobs in China as part of its global layoff of staff in response to the global economic downturn.

The job cuts will be completed by March, the company said. Those made redundant will be offered training to help them find new employment.

In January, Lenovo announced it was cutting 2,500 jobs globally, accounting for about 11 percent of its workforce. However, at the time it claimed that its Chinese workforce would be spared from the cuts.

The company also announced in January that it was merging its Greater China and other Asia-Pacific regions into a single division covering Asia-Pacific and Russia in order to save costs.

Lenovo posted its first quarterly net loss in nearly three years earlier this month, recording a loss of $96.7 million for the final quarter of 2008 due to weakening global demand for its products.
