Beijing. June 25. INTERFAX-CHINA - China Unicom has begun the large-scale release of WCDMA numbers in Shanghai two months ahead of schedule, a China Unicom employee told Interfax on June 25.
Cao Minjun, a marketing employee at China Unicom's Shanghai subsidiary, said that the release of numbers was brought forward from the planned date of Aug. 31 as the operator decided Shanghai had sufficient WCDMA network coverage and capacity. The operator began the limited trial release of WCDMA numbers to selected "high-value" users on May 17.
The 186-prefixed WCDMA numbers are available for purchase from all of Shanghai Unicom's service centers.
The WCDMA service itself is still in a trial period, according to Cao, meaning that users buying WCDMA numbers will only be expected to pay half the price for service bundles. The date when the service will enter full commercial operation has not yet been decided on, according to Cao.
Currently, China Unicom has six mobile broadband service bundles with trial period prices ranging from RMB 2 ($0.29) to RMB 200 ($29.26) per month and seven 3G mobile phone bundles from RMB 186 ($27.22) to RMB 1,686 ($246.69) per month.
