Beijing. September 3. INTERFAX-CHINA - China Mobile has built nearly 50,000 3G base stations in approximately 40 Chinese cities, and has over 133 TD-SCDMA terminal models on the market, a China Mobile employee told Interfax on Sept. 2.
Zhou Jianming, general manager of China Mobile's technology department, said at the Wireless China Industry Summit in Beijing that the operator plans to allocate a budget of RMB 58.8 billion ($8.61 billion) towards the expansion of its 3G TD-SCDMA network to cover 238 cities and increase the total number of base stations to over 80,000 by the end of 2009.
"It is China Mobile's goal to extend coverage of our 3G TD-SCDMA network to match the extensive reach of our 2G GSM network. By the end of the year, nearly every city and town in China should be covered under our 3G network, and we are aiming for an above 95 percent success rate for subscriber migration between the two networks," Zhou said.
There are currently 49 TD-SCDMA handset models, 44 TD-SCDMA netbook models and 40 types of wireless data cards available on the market, as well as a number of other TD-SCDMA terminals, like home routers, according to Zhou.
In order to accelerate the development of its TD-SCDMA services, China Mobile officially launched its Mobile Market online application store on Aug. 21, as well as its own mobile phone operating system, the OPhone OS and several OPhone handsets on Aug. 31.
China Mobile had over 1 million TD-SCDMA subscribers at the end of July, according to statistics released by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).
