China home to 9.77 mln 3G users as services expand

Beijing. December 16. INTERFAX - As of the end of October there were 9.77 million 3G network users in China, of which 3.94 million were TD-SCDMA users, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) announced on Dec. 15.

Between January and October, Chinese telecom operators collectively made a total investment of RMB 102.3 billion ($14.98 billion) towards the national 3G roll out. This figure accounted for 72.3 percent of the MIIT's RMB 143.5 billion ($21.01 billion) investment schedule for 2009, according to the announcement.

China Mobile Communications Corp. (China Mobile) introduced TD-SCDMA services in 38 cities with a network of 46,000 base stations. The operator is currently expanding the network to cover 200 additional cities by the end of 2009.

China United Network Communications Co. Ltd. (China Unicom) launched WCDMA services in 285 cities with a network of 80,000 base stations.

China Telecommunications Corporation Ltd. (China Telecm) has built 117,000 base stations covering 342 cities under its CDMA2000 1x EV-DO network.
