Huawei to invest $500 mln in Indian R & D center

Shanghai. January 11. INTERFAX-CHINA - Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. will invest $500 million over the next five years toward its research and development (R & D) center in Bangalore, India, an employee with the company's Indian subsidiary said on Jan. 8.

Max Yang, Huawei India's chief executive officer (CEO), told reporters that Huawei will also begin manufacturing in India in attempt to dodge steep anti-dumping duties levied on Chinese-made telecom equipment.

In December 2009, the Indian government announced that it would enforce anti-dumping penalties of up to 236 percent of import taxes on Chinese telecom equipment vendors.

Huawei India currently employs a workforce of over 2,000 at its Bangalore R & D center, with plans to hire 5,000 additional employees. Huawei India generated total revenues exceeding $1 billion in 2009, according to Yang.
