Google China denies exit rumors

Shanghai. January 20. INTERFAX-CHINA - Google China has denied media reports that it will shut down China operations in its first official comment on the subject since last week, as posted in an entry on the official company blog on Jan. 19.

In the blog entry, posted at 6:00 p.m. (Beijing time) on Jan. 19, Google denied that its China offices have been closed.

Google China is still operating, its staff is still fully employed, and the company will engage in talks with the Chinese government over the next few weeks in an attempt to negotiate a compromise, according to the post.

Ma Zhaoxu, spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said on the same day that all foreign companies, including Google, must abide by Chinese laws and respect Chinese culture while operating within the country.

According to media reports, Google has postponed a press conference scheduled for Jan. 20, during which the company had planned to launch two Android operated handsets in partnership with China United Network Communications Co. Ltd. (China Unicom), Motorola and Samsung.
